Houston SPCA
The Houston SPCA is Houston’s first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Its mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. I started volunteering for the SPCA in March of 2015 after participating in a corporate event with ConocoPhillips. I have been trained to work with small and large dogs, foster animals, and participate in outreach events like birthday parties and mobile adoptions. Some of my duties include cleaning kennels, doing laundry, walking dogs, assisting costumers, running birthday parties, and helping with Play Groups. Volunteering at the SPCA has been one the most rewarding and memorable experiences of my life. I love seeing animals getting adopted and going to their forever homes. My favorite memory belongs to Junior, an 8 year old Hound that had been in the shelter for over 3 months and had lost his spark. I fostered him for a week to give him a loving home - Junior and I ran together and worked on his manner and tricks. Junior got adopted the day after I dropped him off at the shelter!
Big Event
Big Event is a campus wide community service project that allows the students to say "Thank You" to the residents of the Bryan and College Station areas. This event takes places on March of every year. It begins on an early Saturday morning, in which over 15,000 students come together to volunteer to assist their community. I have participated for two years in a row now. My first time I was in a group with LIFE, Leaders in Freshman Engineering. We were asked to repaint the outside of the resident's house. My second and third year I participated with the SEC, Student Engineers Council. The first time, we worked for a subdivision that had just opened and needed people to help them plant flowers and fix the gardens. The second time, we went to a family's house to help them work on their yard: paint, plant flowers, etc.

TutoringAssisting others has always been part of my personality. It is who I am, I love serving others. It makes me feel happy and useful. Tutoring my peers was an important part of my life during high school. My high school had a program in which teachers encourage hard working students with good grades to tutor their peers. I spent several hours after school tutoring other students for three years. I also dedicated some of my time during the summer to tutor students who had failed the TAKS test. Amazingly, every single student I have tutored for the math section of the TAKS test passed. Some even got commended performance. This is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.
